Blairgowrie & Rattray Highland Games Message from the Chieftain
It
is with immense pride and a deep sense of honour that I accept the role of
Chieftain of the Blairgowrie Highland Games for the next couple of years. To be
entrusted with this position in my hometown is a privilege that means a great
deal to me.
I am particularly honoured to be following in the footsteps of our retired
Chieftain, Laurence Blair Oliphant, to over 30 years of dedication, commitment, enthusiasm
and support for the Games have been exemplary.
I am grateful for the
opportunity to take up the mantle and hope to serve the Games and our community
with the same commitment and enthusiasm.
Born in Blairgowrie and now having lived & worked here for over 40 years, the
town and its people have always supported & enjoyed the Games.
Throughout
the years I have been fortunate to be involved with many local organisations,
events and initiatives, and I have always admired the important role the
Highland Games play in celebrating our heritage, bringing our community
together and welcoming visitors from near and far.
As a Director of the Proctor Group who for over three generations have and
continue to be a main sponsor of the games, I have long appreciated the
tremendous effort that goes into organising this wonderful event.
The
dedication of the Highland Games committee, volunteers, competitors, sponsors
and supporters ensures that the Blairgowrie Highland Games continue to thrive
and maintain their reputation as one of Scotland’s most cherished traditional
gatherings.
The Highland Games are a celebration of our history, culture and community
spirit. They showcase the very best of Blairgowrie, Rattray and surrounding
Glens, and provide an opportunity for generations of families and friends to
come together in a spirit of enjoyment and friendly competition.
You can also
take part in the annual Blairgowrie v Rattray Tug of War challenge and try out your
strength at the lifting of the famous Ardblair Stones. Meet the Ardblair
Highlanders “Our Jacobite Historian Reenactment Army” and hear of the history
along with some great selfie photo opportunities.
I look forward to welcoming competitors, visitors from a far and local
residents to the 2026 Games and to sharing what promises to be another
memorable occasion.
My sincere thanks go to everyone whose hard work and
commitment make this event possible year after year.
I am truly honoured to serve as your Chieftain and look forward to representing
the Games throughout the coming year.
John Johnston
Chieftain, Blairgowrie Highland Games 2026
